Makeover Month: Curly Indian Extensions

This Makeover Month, I have decided to go back to the look I feel defines me and my style. For years, I wore curly Indian extensions and lots of them! So, I called on my original stylist, the man who helped create the Vixen’s look, and we went back to basics!

Lawrence Ray Parker, known simply as Ray, provided the hair, the color, the cut, the styling and styling products for this full bodied, natural look. What better time for new hair than right now and as we get ready for summer.

I achieve this look with about 12 ounces of hair (4 bundles) and styling with Ray’s LRC Hair Care System. The cut and color are custom, ofcourse.

If you would like to purchase this hair, email Lawrence Ray Concepts specify the desired length and number of 3 oz. bundles you’d like and you will receive a quote and ordering instructions.

In the coming days, I will post a video tutorial utilizing new a new LRC product, Shake & Go, not yet available on the company’s website, that is perfect for styling these curly tresses.

Happy Hair!

[Happy New Hair!!!]

I’ve been getting tons of questions about the hair I recently installed for the New Year.

This, ladies, is my new Private Label line of extensions. I am testing the hair before releasing it to you. I want to be sure to give you premium quality and a line of tresses worthy of a Vixen.

Give me just a few weeks. In the meantime, get into the hair with my Blog, Instagram, and Twitter posts all about the hair beginning January 7th.

[Clean Up Your Curls & Kinks]
Here’s another pamper post!
I have very thick, wavy hair. My hair used to be think and curly, but years of heat training have softened the curls, which I am very happy about.
Usually, I wash, condition, and press my hair myself. Over the years, I have raved about the ABBA haircare system. It’s packed with botanicals, is vegan, DEA free and the Moisturizing system does wonders for my natural hair.
Anyway, my hairstylist, Kacey, at Trust Salon in West Hollywood, presses my hair during the times I feel like being pampered and getting a really hard press. Those regular flat irons just cannot do what a more expensive, professional iron can! And, from what I have learned, the power isn’t just in the temperature of the iron but in the type of plates the iron uses. But, what kind of plate and temperature combo is best for my stubborn, thick hair?
Kacey’s iron straightens my hair like nobody’s business and I just always assumed it was some $600 pure ceramic iron that I just wouldn’t bother splurging on so, I never bothered to even look at the brand…
…until a couple days ago.
While I was using her iron to put a few finishing touches on my hair, I took a look at the brand, then, when I got home, I looked it up online and…
BAM!
POW!
BOOM!
…I found this heated wonder stick that makes my hair so straight and shiny and it’s being sold online for under $100!
It’s the BaByliss PRO Nano Titanium.
Buy this little bit of titanium magic and never have to go to the salon for super straight hair again!
This Fourth Quarter Clean Up (#FQCU) we are focused on all sorts of ways we can improve the quality of our lives, including feeling and looking good and saving money! This post honors both.
Glad I could help. I know alot of you have been looking for an iron like this, just as I have.
Enjoy!
[UPDATE] I have been told you can, sometimes, find these as TJ Maxx for about $24.99!!! It’s worth a try so look there first!

Got my shipment of ABBA, today, from ULTA.
Those who have followed my blog for the past year or so know ABBA’s haircare and styling products are the only ones I trust to come anywhere near my tresses.
ULTA has these salon sized bottles half off right now, as the often do. Each bottle is usually around $30 to $35, but you can get them now for just $14.99!
Naturally, my purchase came with the 3 samples of my choice AND they also sent a free pump for one of my bottles –– though 2 would have been better.
Either way, now is a great time to get your ABBA, either online or in-store.

My girlfriend, Dre, introduced me to a new hair salon, last week. I’d been tired of paying hundreds of dollars for a simple press and curl on the west side of town.
Sometimes, a girl just wants to pay what a service is actually worth and not what the fancy-ass neighborhood salon wants you to believe it’s worth!
So, I drove a little further east than I am accustomed and met her at a Dominican owned salon. As the myth goes, Dominicans are geniuses at dealing with thick, curly hair like mine and Dre’s.
As I walked into the Domini Salon, I thought it pretty cute and cozy. It’s decor, in keeping with the building’s decor, was industrial chic.
Oh, and I wore my super cute, red ballerinas, which I’d purchased months before and never wore.
Anyway, I washed and dried my hair before getting there, which I always do since I hate sitting under the hooded dryer and, frankly, I have no interest in being in a hair salon more than 1.5 hours.
Instead of using a pressing comb, the stylist used a blow dryer and a series of rounded smoothing brushes to straighten and smooth my hair. Then, as requested, she used a plug-in flat iron to curl my hair.
Overall, my hair came out okay. It wasn’t the best and I had to press my edges once I got home but, for $25, I wasn’t upset.
I would still go to the fancy-schmancy Trust Salon for my super straight and expensive styles but I wouldn’t mind paying just $25 for a simple curl more often. I’ll just be sure to press my edges before going in.

So, as the story goes, my little sister told me about this “amazing” deep conditioner that I just had to try.
She raved about it.
She went on and on and bugged me for about three days.
“Did you try it yet?”
“No.”
“How about now?”
“Still no.”
“Today? Did you try it today?”
“Damn it! No!”
So, finally, I tried this conditioner: Macadamia Natural Oil. Now, before I go any further, I am an avid ABBA hair care user and fanatic. I have written about this product line several times and have praised it for its use of botanicals and for its omission of harmful chemicals and animal bi-products.
Now, my sister wants me to use this miraculous conditioner that’s, supposedly, going to change my life.
So, I washed my hair with my usual ABBA Moisturizing Shampoo and rewashed it a couple more times to be sure my hair was squeaky clean. Okay, then, I added the Macadamia to my damp tresses. I combed the conditioner through, covered it with a conditioning cap, wrapped my head in a towel, and waited.
Thirty minutes later…
I rinsed.
I air dried.
I blow dried.
I noticed nothing spectacular.
In reading the list of ingredients, during my thirty minute wait, I found this product to be almost completely made of things difficult to pronounce. Chemical after chemical after chemical with a couple drops of oils.
My thought is that, instead of really treating your hair, this product will coat it, making it is appear shinier and feel silkier, but not necessarily healthier.
I am not impressed.
I am not easlity swayed.
I am not dazzled by wizardry.
For me, a little warm, organic olive or coconut oil does a fine job at conditioning my hair. Even homemade mayo does an awesome job.
But this…
This is crap and I’m glad I only bought the one-ounce pouch for $3.99. I refuse to put these chemicals in my hair again, much less every week. I’m sticking to my ABBA.
You see, this is why I am the big sister.

Go to Ulta to find ABBA shampoo and conditioner, the salon sizes, HALF OFF. Then, enter DISCOUNT CODE 17739 or 18593 to save an additional 20% on your entire purchase.

My shampoo and conditioner would usually cost over $60, then extra for shipping. Here, I spend just $32 for everything and ordered a few samples to give away to anyone who buys books from me.

Done and done.

I am taking the day to touch-up my hair before filming my next vlog.  Here’s what I did:
Dyeing:
Bigen (Oriental Black)
Playtex gloves (to assure protection of my awesome new mani and skin)
Application brush
Glass bowl (no metal or plastic)
Water (mix with Bigen according to directions)
Cleansing & Conditioning:
ABBA Moisturizing Shampoo
ABBA Moisturizing Conditioner
Playtex gloves (to protect hands from staining)
Dark colored towel
Infusium Leave-In Conditioner
After mixing and applying the hair color, let sit long enough to take effect. For me, just dyeing my roots, 25 minutes was more than enough. Brush through.
Wash and condition, leaving the conditioner on for 15 to 25 minutes, covered by a conditioning cap and a towel.
Rinse the conditioner, towel off the excess water, and spray Leave-in conditioner throughout. Brush through and wrap hair in a towel, once again.
Remove towel when hair is damp and not wet, let air dry for a bit, then blow dry. When hair is completely dry, press along the hairline, then flat iron the hair. I keep my flat iron hot by keeping it in a sheath made for my curling iron. (See photo)
After flat ironing, wrap the hair using a paddle brush, smoothing brush, large alligator clips, and a silk scarf.
