[Clean Up Your Curls & Kinks]

I have very thick, wavy hair. My hair used to be think and curly, but years of heat training have softened the curls, which I am very happy about.

Usually, I wash, condition, and press my hair myself. Over the years, I have raved about the ABBA haircare system. It’s packed with botanicals, is vegan, DEA free and the Moisturizing system does wonders for my natural hair.

Anyway, my hairstylist, Kacey, at Trust Salon in West Hollywood, presses my hair during the times I feel like being pampered and getting a really hard press. Those regular flat irons just cannot do what a more expensive, professional iron can! And, from what I have learned, the power isn’t just in the temperature of the iron but in the type of plates the iron uses. But, what kind of plate and temperature combo is best for my stubborn, thick hair?

Dyed my hair the other day. It had been a while and my blondish brownish roots were giving me the blues in all this summertime sun.

Got my shipment of ABBA, today, from ULTA.

Those who have followed my blog for the past year or so know ABBA’s haircare and styling products are the only ones I trust to come anywhere near my tresses.

ULTA has these salon sized bottles half off right now, as the often do. Each bottle is usually around $30 to $35, but you can get them now for just $14.99! 

Naturally, my purchase came with the 3 samples of my choice AND they also sent a free pump for one of my bottles –– though 2 would have been better.

Either way, now is a great time to get your ABBA, either online or in-store.

Yep…you’re looking at burned hair and skin.

This was done at Domini Salon in Silverlake, CA by a “stylist” named DeShawn.

I could go on and on about it but, I think the pictures say it all.

This is what I get for going east of Doheny for anything but a taco.

My girlfriend, Dre, introduced me to a new hair salon, last week. I’d been tired of paying hundreds of dollars for a simple press and curl on the west side of town.

Sometimes, a girl just wants to pay what a service is actually worth and not what the fancy-ass neighborhood salon wants you to believe it’s worth!

So, I drove a little further east than I am accustomed and met her at a Dominican owned salon. As the myth goes, Dominicans are geniuses at dealing with thick, curly hair like mine and Dre’s.

As I walked into the Domini Salon, I thought it pretty cute and cozy. It’s decor, in keeping with the building’s decor, was industrial chic.

Oh, and I wore my super cute, red ballerinas, which I’d purchased months before and never wore.

Anyway, I washed and dried my hair before getting there, which I always do since I hate sitting under the hooded dryer and, frankly, I have no interest in being in a hair salon more than 1.5 hours.

Instead of using a pressing comb, the stylist used a blow dryer and a series of rounded smoothing brushes to straighten and smooth my hair. Then, as requested, she used a plug-in flat iron to curl my hair.

Overall, my hair came out okay. It wasn’t the best and I had to press my edges once I got home but, for $25, I wasn’t upset.

I would still go to the fancy-schmancy Trust Salon for my super straight and expensive styles but I wouldn’t mind paying just $25 for a simple curl more often. I’ll just be sure to press my edges before going in.

Today, Blaire and I went to The Abbey in West Hollywood to –– ummm –– discuss business.

In the interim, we admired my chignon.

I am taking the day to touch-up my hair before filming my next vlog.  Here’s what I did:

Dyeing:

• Bigen (Oriental Black)
• Playtex gloves (to assure protection of my awesome new mani and skin)
• Application brush
• Glass bowl (no metal or plastic)
• Water (mix with Bigen according to directions)

Cleansing & Conditioning:

• ABBA Moisturizing Shampoo
• ABBA Moisturizing Conditioner
• Playtex gloves (to protect hands from staining)
• Dark colored towel
• Infusium Leave-In Conditioner

After mixing and applying the hair color, let sit long enough to take effect. For me, just dyeing my roots, 25 minutes was more than enough. Brush through.

Wash and condition, leaving the conditioner on for 15 to 25 minutes, covered by a conditioning cap and a towel.

Rinse the conditioner, towel off the excess water, and spray Leave-in conditioner throughout. Brush through and wrap hair in a towel, once again.

Remove towel when hair is damp and not wet, let air dry for a bit, then blow dry. When hair is completely dry, press along the hairline, then flat iron the hair. I keep my flat iron hot by keeping it in a sheath made for my curling iron. (See photo)

After flat ironing, wrap the hair using a paddle brush, smoothing brush, large alligator clips, and a silk scarf.
